Recovery Capital is an evidence-based concept that refers to the broad range of personal and external assets available to individuals that help in not only starting but sustaining their recovery. It is often categorized into various types, including:
The concept of Recovery Capital is holistic and acknowledges that recovery is not solely about abstaining from substance use but involves building a fulfilling, meaningful life. By assessing an individual's Recovery Capital, treatment providers can tailor interventions to strengthen these resources, address gaps, and support a more robust and resilient recovery process.
The more Recovery Capital an individual has, the better their chances of achieving and maintaining recovery.
The greater the Recovery Capital at one's disposal, the higher the likelihood of making progress.
Recovery Capital is "the breadth and depth of internal and external resources that can be drawn upon to initiate and sustain recovery from alcohol or drug problems. (Granfield and Cloud 2004).
Recovery Capital employs assessment tools for recovery (such as Commitment to Recovery, Recovery Barriers, Unmet Service Needs, Involvement in Recovery Groups, Engagement in Meaningful Activities, and more) to develop a precise and detailed understanding of an individual's current state in their recovery journey.
At Seed Sower, we visualize the individual's assessment in a map that helps Peer Navigators guide in establishing recovery goals to achieve resiliency. Barriers and unmet needs are mapped to concrete goals and resources to address them. The plan also uses existing strengths that the individual brings to the table. Progress is evaluated in Peer Recovery Support Specialist-led navigation sessions either bi-weekly, monthly or quarterly.
